Jean Paul Sartre
Jean Paul Sartre is an Existentialist. He once had an open relationship with Simone De Beauvoir and they were known as the father and mother of activism. They never got married because they believe that if they get married, they will lose the sense of freedom. Meanwhile, Simone De Beauvoir died in 1986. At the age of 10, Sartre said that nothing would change even though God doesn’t exist. Jean Paul Sartre’s philosophy focused on freedom. His idea is that man’s body is the entirely of freedom. According to him, there are three movements of self where being is in a perpetual state of freedom; being in the sense that it is always in a constant motion. The three movements are Being-in-itself meaning conscious of yourself only; Being-for-itself meaning somebody is watching your actions; and being-for-others meaning you will end up being responsible for other’s freedom. He also gave point about bad faith which he meant that when a moment where one allows oneself to be objectified by the other; when one is consciously giving his freedom to others; and would be a lie to oneself within the unity of a single consciousness.
From Jean Paul Sartre’s philosophy, he clearly showed how he really believes in freedom. Freedom, freedom is actually what everyone needs in this world. But do people really understand the real meaning of freedom? Sartre pointed out that freedom is when we don’t allow others to control us. And from the moment we allow them, that is when bad faith comes in. Bad faith, if not for Sartre, I wouldn’t know such words that they are actually right about things.
We commit ourselves to people but we don’t manage to realize that they are slowly controlling us and slowly dictating how to live our lives. It is not really literally dictating and controlling that it is hard to notice but it is as simply as giving your hand to someone and let him direct to your destination. Bad faith, I think, is simply surrendering your freedom to someone or to something. Even things can give us bad faith. When we start to do things out of boredom, we are currently in a bad faith. When we start to do things out of our will, we are on a bad faith. Most people are in a bad faith, I could say. We are governed with rules therefore our freedom has already been taken away and the duty is for us to follow the rules. We have a government therefore we ought to do what they want us to do. We are in school or office, and we have those people who give us the tasks that we have to do. Bad faith, it is simply doing what other people want us to do.
But when we love what we do, but when we decide on our own, but when we take hold of our own steps, that is when we contradict bad faith. When we are happy in what we do, we are not on a bad faith. People have their own perceptions, ideas, desires and goals in life. In one way or the other, we can’t both have the same perceptions, ideas, desires and goals. I think we are all in a bad faith with one another. But we can just defy it when we are happy doing it and when we decide for something on our own. It is when we do it not because they want us to do it but because we, for ourselves, also want to do it.
