Mardi Gras Fancy Dress Costume And Accessory Ideas For The Family

In the French Quarter of New Orleans they celebrate Mardi Gras, to Brazilians it’s carnival, but the overall effect is the same on the eye – a mid-February riot of colour as flamboyantly  costumed revellers parade through the streets in an explosion of song and dance. Also known as Fat Tuesday – or Shrove Tuesday to the pancake-loving UK and Ireland – Mardi Gras is marked by worldwide spectaculars that draw thousands of onlookers who enter into the spirit of the occasion by dressing up, whether it be a ball gown with mask and matching accessories or equally eye-catching outfit. Let’s look at some mardi gras fancy dress ideas for the whole family.

INFANTS – Honestly, it doesn’t matter what you put your little darlings in as they are going to look adorable whatever, but you do have a choice of styles from pretty princess, cute teddy and funny spiders to dangerous dinosaurs among so many. Disney will always play a big part for kiddies of any age with a huge choice of costumes and themes. Infant fairy costumes are soooo popular with the likes of Sugar Plum Fairy and Tulip Fairy. And what about the much-loved Pumpkin Patch, Lil Vampire (cool), Lil Red Riding Hood, various Barbie dolls and so many more? As it’s Mardi Gras, you could always go traditional and opt for Lil Harlequin costume, really cute. The most important thing about a tot’s costume is their comfort and how long they are going to be wearing it. When the time comes for them to take a nap, will they be comfortable in the costume? Always bear this in mind.

LITTLE GIRLS – Have you noticed, no matter how small they are, once they can start thinking for themselves they have an immovable determination? If they do not like something, that is it! And the same goes with fancy dress costumes as you cannot always guarantee sweet and cute. For those that do, there are the beloved Disney themes and princesses galore. Little Mermaid, Aladdin Jasmine, Snow White, Beauty & the Beast, Cinderella and the adored Tinkerbell are just a few options. If your little girl likes to play Superhero, there are always the ever-popular Spidergirl, Batgirl and Wonderwoman. Star Wars, Harry Potter, Star Trek, and Pirates of the Caribbean are among many film themes that highlight popular costume must-haves with kiddies. You may be lucky that she loves the mardi gras theme costume. A cute little black and white number very in tune with mardi gras. But….for the little sweetie who has a darker side, then you cannot go wrong with a fabulous range of witches’ costumes with a choice of dark Gothic to pretty glittery. Both have some stunning looks. Gothic Fairy and Dark Bride do well along with Gothic Tinkerbell.

SMALL BOYS – So much to choose from and I think there are enough costumes to dress them in to match their personality. From swashbuckling pirates to The Hulk and Superman are among action, superheroes and film themes. If you’re finding the choice hard, your little one will let you know what he likes. For the boy of any age, Spiderman is excellent and very realistic. Wear this fantastic fancy dress costume and he will actually believe he can fly and spin webs. Captain America and Iron Man are ideal for the little macho man. The ever-popular Vampire costumes with fangs and blood are high on many boys’ list along with Grim Reaper, Skull of Death, Howling Horror, Zombie and Messenger of Death. Famous celebrities such as Michael Jackson, Elvis, etc are for those who dream of being a singing star. Of course, don’t forget the Mardi Gras themes for clowns and jesters with some great mardi gras capes and masks.

ADULTS – For traditional ladies’ Mardi Gras costumes, you have a choice of little cute and sexy to full-blown cape with long gown and mask. It all depends on mood, but there is always something rather mysterious about not revealing your identity until midnight. Great if you want to hide. For the male, it is the same. Do you want to be the fun clown or jester? Or do you prefer to look exciting and mysterious, revealing yourself only at midnight? Costumes are varied, but the Masquerade Ball Cape and Mask look terrific.

MARDI GRAS MASKS – A must-have at your Mardi Gras Party. So many styles to choose from, be it spectacularly jewelled, sequinned, full face or half.  Do you want to hide your face until midnight or stay beautifully mysterious? The Red Genie is quite an elaborate mask for those who crave colour and sparkle. It’s a red sequin eye mask with braided gold trim, shiny gold leaf decor, attached braided gold chain with dangling gold-beaded fringe and accompanying gold coins. Now you’re really ready for the Masquerade Ball.

ACCESSORIES – Wigs, hair bows, crowns, jewelled slides and hair clips, coloured hair spray and glowbys. For the little vampires, male and female, there are bloody vampire bites, wounds, scars and fangs, with and without blood, that all go towards adding those perfect finishing touches.

FACE PAINTING – Think about maximising the look of your fancy dress with some clever little face painting touches. Are any of your children wearing a Hulk, Shrek, Spiderman or Witches costume? Then why not face paint them! It wouldn’t be too difficult either. Think about the likes of a witch, Shrek or The Hulk, these designs give you a head start straight away. Paint the whole face with your chosen green base colour, don’t forget to let each coat dry first, then add your shades and shadows around the eyes and mouth. Clown face painting is easy, too. Do a full face base coat of white, then add your red cheeks and nose, and don’t forget some blue crosses over the eyes. Spiderman is the same. A full red base coat, then, with a fine brush, carefully paint your spider’s web either on a cheek or over one side of the face. Ladybirds and bugs are also good. Use the right sized brush or stencils and add the spots as required.
This easy but effective face painting will make the costume come to life plus the kids love having their faces painted.
