“Fallout: New Vegas” is Bethesda Softworks’ sequel to their last post-apocalyptic role-playing shooter, “Fallout 3.”
Set in the year 2281, 200 years after the Great War in which every nation capable of nuclear power launched their stockpile of atomic bombs, “Fallout” takes place in an irradiated America where the culture never developed past the 1950′s. As such, technology and art were created as how the people of the time envisioned it, with atomic powered cars and laser pistols wielded by greasers listening to Bob Crosby.
Rather than a direct sequel, the series changes locations to focus on the west coast, in the deserts surrounding Las Vegas. As opposed to the Lone Wanderer from the last game, you play as the Courier, a deliveryman on his way to deliver a platinum poker chip who’s captured, shot in the head and left to die in a shallow grave. After being rescued by a robot cowboy named Victor and patched up by the friendly Doc Mitchel, you set out on a journey to recover the package and get revenge.
The greatest change from “New Vegas” predecessor is the atmosphere of the game. As opposed to the wasteland-saving storyline of “Fallout 3,” “New Vegas” plot is just the story of a person out for revenge, reminiscent of many of spaghetti westerns. In fact, a lot of the stuff in the game is reminiscent of movies like The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly and 3:10 to Yuma. Gunslingers and cowboys replace raiders and scavengers and the stark, grey skies of “Fallout 3′s” D.C. ruins are replaced by sunny, almost peaceful stretches of desert. A lot of buildings are intact and the people are a lot less bitter and stressed out.
Along the way, you can choose to either side with the New California Republic, a group of lawmen and soldiers who want to bring order to the Mojave desert, or Caesar’s Legion, slave drivers who take their practices from the Roman Empire, though it’s more Caesar’s Palace Casino than Chariots of Fire, with legionnaires in football pads led by Emperor Caesar (pronounced Kay-sar), both of which want control of the Hoover Dam, and the energy it provides for the populace.
Character interaction is also emphasized, with Reputation taking the place of Karma. Whenever you finish a quest or simply attack the wrong person, in addition to gaining karma, you have a chance to gain fame or infamy with a certain organization, such as small towns or even entire governments.
Notable gameplay changes include the addition of iron sights to weapons, so free aiming has come a long way from the pseudo-zoom-in present in Fallout 3. There is also a brand new Hardcore Mode.
Hardcore Mode is for the dedicated Fallout players, as sleeping, eating and drinking are all required, and the player can only heal themselves with help of a doctor or with the right skills. Companions can also be ordered around now, with a new Companion Wheel making partner management a lot easier.
“New Vegas,” of course, has gambling minigames available for those who are feeling lucky, but if you’re too good you’ll find yourself escorted out of the casino, or worse.
On the technical side, with Vegas being slightly less irradiated than D.C., the developers took the time to add in some lush visuals, from the freshwater lakes to the flashy lights of the titular New Vegas strip. They also managed to get some star power, with actors such as Matthew Perry, Danny Trejo, and Wil Wheaton providing voicework. Adding to that is a soundtrack featuring Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, and Kay Kyser to create an immersive and fun game world.
However, spoiling the fun is the usual assortment of bugs and glitches in a Bethesda game. Once, while exploring a sunken Vault, I moved up a dirt mound to find myself trapped as I slowly drowned to death. Another time, I disabled a hidden landmine, only to discover that it angered the fort full of formerly friendly soldiers. Other times the game would simply crash behind a loading screen, causing me to start all over from the beginning of whatever building I was currently scavenging. Also, whoever thought it was a good idea to limit saves had some good intentions, as if I lose at slots, why can’t I just load the game again, but soon I hit my save limit and had to go back and manually delete all the saves I didn’t want. Way to go.
“Fallout: New Vegas” is a true sequel. They did what any good sequel should do, and that’s take the ideas of the original, strip out (some of) the bad, add in some good and bring an experience to the table that seasoned players can appreciate while making it so newcomers can get the hang of it all pretty quickly. Some annoyingly frustrating bugs aside, it’s definitely worth a buy, as three days have passed and I’ve still barely scratched the surface. Maybe I’ll be halfway done after another week.
