Associazione San Pietro in Rome

On September 15, 1970, Paul VI Pontifical dissolving the armed forces, including the Palatine Guard of Honor, established by Pius IX in 1850 to collect, in the House of the Pope, a qualified representative of the faithful of Rome, eager to demonstrate to the Apostolic See their unconditional loyalty.

The members of the dissolved Military Corps were named to join a new body – the SS Association. Peter and Paul – whose statute was approved by the Holy Father in 1971. Paul VI wanted so that the specific characteristics of the specimens and by the Palatine Guard were “preserved, strengthened, adapted and developed”, as pointed out by John Paul II on the occasion of the tenth anniversary of constitution of the Society. The Association of SS. Peter and Paul – who celebrates forty years of activity in 2006 – is made up of Catholics living in Rome (professionals, craftsmen, students, teachers, employees, etc..) That, beyond their family and professional commitments, devote their time a number of organized voluntary initiatives, “eager to cleave a particular witness of Christian life, apostolate, and of fidelity to the Apostolic See” (Article 1 of the Statute).

The same Palatine Guard, after all, far sunk its historical roots, to be found in two military corps – the Urban Militia and the Civil Guard Choice – whose merger was born and which, in turn, were continued in the service of other formations of the Apostolic See and the person of the Pope, have occurred since the sixth century onwards. It can be said, therefore, that the Palatine Guard and somehow the association has updated the values ??and the volunteer service, are heirs of the ancient and perhaps the cohortes urbanae Militia Sancti Petri, which in the high Middle Ages, the Popes were used. The Association is divided into three sections: Liturgical, Cultural and Charitable. In addition to operating the sports group sections (with a football team that participates in the Championship Vatican), the band (with the liturgical choir and the formation of “Brass”) and the Group of Doctors, very busy, in addition to ongoing support Liturgical service of the Section, in care initiatives.
